Quick Answer

Pothole repair is the targeted removal of failed asphalt and installation of a durable hot-mix patch. A properly executed pothole repair — square cuts to sound pavement, a clean compacted base, hot-mix placed at the right temperature, and full-density compaction — lasts as long as the surrounding pavement.

What this service includes

Every project from Maisano Brothers Inc. covers the work that makes the result last.

Site assessment and safety

We assess the failure, identify the underlying cause, and set up traffic control where the repair is in a live roadway or active lot.

Square-cut excavation

We saw-cut or chisel the failed area to sound pavement on all four sides, removing crumbled material and exposing a clean vertical edge for the patch to bond against.

Base repair and compaction

If the base has failed, we excavate to a stable subgrade, install compacted processed stone, and re-establish the surface elevation.

Hot-mix asphalt patching

We place hot-mix asphalt in lifts at the correct temperature and roll to full density, so the patch carries traffic the day it is placed.

Final compaction and tack coat

Edges are tack-coated for a watertight bond between the new patch and the surrounding pavement, and the patch is rolled flush to the existing surface.

Is This Right For You?

When this service makes sense

  • You have an active pothole that is a liability or safety risk.
  • Cold patch is no longer holding and the same failure keeps returning.
  • Multiple isolated potholes need attention without resurfacing the whole pavement.
  • A road or lot needs emergency attention before a larger paving project is scheduled.
  • You want a permanent repair, not a temporary fix.

Quality & Craftsmanship

Materials, equipment, and quality

The standards and details that separate work built to last from work built to look finished.

Hot-mix, not cold patch

Cold patch is convenient but it fails. We use hot-mix asphalt at proper placement temperature for a permanent bond.

Square-cut edges

Round patches fail at the edges. Square-cut vertical edges give the new asphalt something solid to bond against.

Base repair when needed

A surface patch over a failed base just fails again. We dig deep enough to find sound material before we patch.

Tack coat at edges

A thin tack coat at the perimeter creates a watertight seal between the patch and the surrounding pavement.

Common Questions

Frequently asked questions

How long does a hot-mix pothole repair last?

A properly executed hot-mix patch — square cuts, base repair where needed, full compaction — lasts as long as the surrounding pavement. We have patches still holding strong decades later.

Can you repair potholes in winter?

Hot-mix asphalt requires a working plant, and most Connecticut plants are closed from late November to mid-March. We can place temporary cold patch in winter, then return for a permanent hot-mix repair when plants reopen.

How quickly can you respond?

We can typically schedule a non-emergency pothole repair within the week. For active hazards in commercial lots, we work to be on site faster.

Do you do single potholes or only larger jobs?

We do both. A single liability hazard in a parking lot is worth our time when it keeps a property safe.

Why does the same pothole keep coming back?

Returning potholes are a base problem, not a surface problem. The fix is to excavate to sound subgrade, install proper base material, and patch. Surface-only repairs over a failed base fail again.
